On Aug. 27, 1776, British forces defeat George Washington’s Continental Army at the Battle of Brooklyn, also known as the Battle of Long Island. It was the first battle after the United States declared independence, and one of the largest engagements of the Revolutionary War. As a result of their victory, the British took control of the strategic Port of New York, which they held throughout the war. Despite the defeat, Washington’s forces were able to avoid capture by the British when they escaped to Manhattan in boats. |
