On Aug. 10, 1977, serial killer David Berkowitz, known as the “Son of Sam,” is arrested. For more than a year, he terrorized New York City, killing at least six and wounding several others. Because he targeted young, attractive women with long brown hair, many women cut their hair or stayed home while he was at large. After his arrest, Berkowitz, who was diagnosed as a paranoid schizophrenic, told officers his neighbor’s Black Labrador, Sam, had ordered him to kill people. He received six 25-years-to-life sentences. |
