On Aug. 26, 1964, President Lyndon B. Johnson is nominated to be the Democratic candidate for president. Johnson, who was John F. Kennedy’s vice president in 1960, became president after Kennedy’s assassination. In the 1964 election, Johnson defeated Republican candidate Barry Goldwater in a landslide, winning over 61% of the popular vote and 486 electoral votes. |
