On Aug. 6, 1928, pop artist Andy Warhol is born Andy Warhola in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. His career in art began as a commercial illustrator in the late 1940s, but he began painting in the late 1950s. He is renowned for his 1960s paintings of consumer goods, including soup cans, soda cans and blown-up depictions of comic strips. He also made silk screen paintings, with images of actress Marilyn Monroe and former first lady Jackie Kennedy among the most notable. Warhol’s influence peaked in the 1960s, ebbed in the 1970s and then rose again in the 1980s. He died in 1987. |
