China’s government is expanding its censorship controls by targeting Chinese citizens overseas who criticize Beijing on social media.  The pressure tactic is called “zhulian,” an ancient punishment meaning “guilt by association.” It usually involves police threatening family members in China for the actions of their relatives overseas.

On July 9, 1850, President Zachary Taylor dies suddenly after serving just 16 months. While the cause of his death is still disputed, the most widely accepted explanation is he died of a digestive ailment after a Fourth of July celebration at the Washington Monument construction site. The 12th president rose to the office as a member of the Whig Party after a long career in the military, which included involvement in the War of 1812, several Indian Wars and the Mexican-American War. He was succeeded by Millard Fillmore.

The number of people infected with the coronavirus is rising sharply in the United States. But the number of people dying is flat. Some experts say that may change.

July 11 marks the 25th anniversary of the Srebrenica massacre. Decades later, survivors and other Bosnians still have a difficult time speaking about the calamities they endured. VOA reports how Bosnian-Americans are marking the anniversary.
