On July 28, 1932, President Herbert Hoover orders the U.S. Army to disperse the “Bonus Army,” protesters made up largely of World War I veterans seeking early payment of a bonus promised to them for their service. About 2,000 people are expelled from a camp in Washington near the Anacostia River. At least one man is killed when police opened fire on some of the group. |
