VIDEO: Amid the protests that have flared up in the U.S. capital, the owners of some downtown D.C. restaurants and cafes saw their businesses looted and damaged. But despite the damage and having to wait even longer to finally reopen their venues, some business owners are choosing to support the protesters.

On This Day in American History
On June 10, 1928, author and illustrator Maurice Sendak is born in Brooklyn, New York. Sendak is most known for authoring and illustrating the classic children’s book, Where the Wild Things Are, which was published in 1963. The highly acclaimed book was novel in the way it depicted childhood worries and rebellion, and some called the book too scary for children. But in 1964, Sendak’s book was awarded the prestigious Caldecott Medal. Sendak died in 2012 at the age of 83.

More than 50 people were arrested in Hong Kong on Tuesday night after thousands of protesters defied a police ban to mark the first anniversary of the city’s anti-government movement.

An increased number of Nigerian children are in the labor force right now because schools have closed due to the coronavirus pandemic. Experts monitoring child labor in the country say since the pandemic shutdown, more children are working as hawkers, cleaners or on city streets begging to earn money to help their families.

An African American officer will now lead a U.S. military service branch for the first time in history, after the Senate confirmed Gen. Charles Brown Jr. on Tuesday as U.S. Air Force Chief of Staff in a unanimous vote of 98-0.

U.N. experts say the COVID-19 pandemic is worsening widespread food shortages and malnutrition in North Korea, causing more hunger and ill health. The World Food Program says more than 10 million people, or nearly 40 percent of the population, are in need of humanitarian aid.
