On Aug. 17, 1978, the Double Eagle II balloon completes the first transatlantic balloon flight after landing in France. Piloted by Ben Abruzzo, Maxie Anderson and Larry Newman, the flight from Maine took 137 hours and 6 minutes. It was the 14th known attempt to cross the Atlantic in a balloon. The gondola is displayed at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum’s Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center near Washington, D.C. |
