President Donald Trump has renewed his resolve to “bring our soldiers back home” from Afghanistan, publicly questioning the goal of the current U.S. military mission to the war-torn country.

On May 28, 1998, comedian Phil Hartman is gunned down in his home by his wife, who then turned the gun on herself. Phil Hartman was 49. Hartman was most well known for his eight years as a cast member of Saturday Night Live where he did numerous impersonations of celebrities and politicians, including President Bill Clinton. Hartman also voice several characters on the popular animated series, The Simpsons, including washed up actor Troy McClure. The Hartmans were survived by two children.

The economic fallout from COVID-19 is upending the financial security of all demographics in the United States. But African Americans are especially feeling the pain. Nearly 17% of black Americans are unemployed compared to 14% of white Americans. 

VIDEO: For years, many in Turkey have warned of the country’s slide to what one commentator called “an elected autocracy” under President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Now, as the coronavirus recedes, the government has tightened already stringent controls on social media. Critics say the pandemic is accelerating Turkey’s descent from democratic freedoms. VOA reports from Istanbul.

VIDEO: The coronavirus pandemic has changed America’s consumer behavior. People have altered their buying habits, stocked up on groceries and household items and resorted to online shopping. Experts believe these changes will be long lasting.

Applications for unemployment compensation eased again in the U.S. last week, as some employers started to reopen businesses. Even so, another 2.1 million more workers sought cash benefits after being laid off as other businesses curtailed their operations in the face of the continuing threat from the virus.
