As more Americans stay home amid widespread lockdowns, grocery and retail stores as well as food banks and charities across the country are struggling to keep up with the increased demand for many food items and essential supplies.

On This Day in American History
On April 23, 1969, Sirhan Sirhan is sentenced to death for the assassination of Democratic presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy. On June 5, 1968, Kennedy, who had just given a victory speech, was making his way from the ballroom of the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles toward the hotel kitchen when Sirhan shot him three times. Sirhan’s death sentence was later reduced to life in 1972 when California abolished the death penalty. Sirhan, now 76, is currently incarcerated in a California prison.

VIDEO: The top U.S. diplomat is defending President Donald Trump’s decision to pause U.S. funding to the World Health Organization for 60 to 90 days. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo says WHO officials still are not publicly calling out China for failing to share information about the origins of the coronavirus. Global health experts have criticized Trump’s move, saying the organization’s work is more vital than ever. 

Analysts are predicting that China’s recent high-profile posturing over Hong Kong signals a bumpy political future for the semiautonomous city and the likely return of mass protests.

As online classes have proliferated due to the coronavirus, more than 190 colleges in the United States have offered alternative grading methods to give students more flexibility and control over their academic performance.

VIDEO: U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order Wednesday suspending for 60 days the issuance of permanent residency status, also known as green cards. He described it as an effort to protect American workers’ jobs during the coronavirus pandemic. While Trump said the order is “powerful,” as VOA reports, the action contains many exceptions and may only affect a small number of people.
