On April 21, 1980, Rosie Ruiz finishes first in the Boston Marathon with a time of 2:31:56, the third fastest time for a woman and a 25-minute improvement from her performance at the New York Marathon in 1979. This raised suspicions among many, and eight days later Ruiz was stripped of her win when officials revealed she’d jumped into the race just a mile before the finish line. It was later revealed that during the New York race, she’d ridden the subway part of the way. |
