On April 14, 1865, John Wilkes Booth shoots President Abraham Lincoln in the back of the head as the president watched a play at Ford’s Theater in Washington, D.C. After shooting Lincoln, Booth shouted, “Sic semper tyrannis! (Ever thus to tyrants!) The South is avenged,” and then jumped onto the stage, breaking his leg. Despite the injury, he was able to flee Washington. The mortally wounded Lincoln died the next day. On April 26, Booth, who was hiding on a Virginia farm, was killed. |
