On This Day in American History |

On April 7, 1954, President Dwight D. Eisenhower, during a news conference on instability Southeast Asia, says that if Vietnam were to fall to communism, its neighbors could, like dominoes, fall as well. The domino theory, as it was later called, paved the way for U.S. military involvement in Vietnam and dominated U.S. foreign policy for decades. For example, in the ’80s, the domino theory was used to justify U.S. involvement in Central America after Nicaragua fell to communists in 1979. |
