Experts seem to agree: If you are not a health care worker, do not buy N95 masks, long considered the Cadillac of protective masks. That said, there is still debate over whether everyone should wear some kind of face covering when they go outside.

On April 2, 1917, the first congresswoman, Jeannette Pickering Rankin, takes her seat as a representative from Montana. Rankin, a progressive Republican, had long advocated for women’s suffrage and was key to giving women the vote in Montana. Although male members of her congressional class were seated a month earlier, Rankin was delayed while congressmen debated whether a woman could be admitted to Congress. Rankin was also a pacifist, and one of her first votes was against American involvement in World War I. She left Congress after losing a Senate bid, but was re-elected as a congresswoman in 1940.

Minneapolis restaurant owner Abdirahman Kahin is keeping his kitchen open to help feed people in need. Kahin and his volunteers are helping older members of the Somali community, and their neighbors, along with other elderly and disabled Minnesotans who are stuck at home due to the spread of the coronavirus.

The top U.S. general in South Korea said he does not accept North Korea’s claim that it has no coronavirus cases. Pyongyang has repeatedly insisted it remains virus-free, even as the disease ravages countries around the world.

Southern Louisiana is no stranger to disasters and sudden loss of life. The region still bears the scars of Hurricane Katrina in 2005, the 2010 BP oil spill and Baton Rouge’s catastrophic flooding in 2016. Now, the region finds itself a hotspot of the coronavirus pandemic.

As Turkish authorities proceed toward legislation permitting the release of thousands of prisoners to try to prevent the spread of the coronavirus, several rights groups are criticizing the government for excluding imprisoned dissidents, human rights defenders and journalists.
