On February 10, 1962, Soviet and American officials swap spies in Berlin. The Soviets traded American U-2 pilot Francis Gary Powers, who was shot down over the Soviet Union, for KGB spy, Colonel Rudolf Abel, who was caught in the U.S. five years earlier. The exchange took place on the Glienicker Bridge, which connected East and West Berlin across Lake Wannsee. Another American, student Frederic Pryor, was handed over to American authorities at a different location. The event was popularized in the 2015 movie, “Bridge of Spies,” starring Tom Hanks. |
