On January 14, 1943, President Franklin D. Roosevelt arrives in Casablanca, French North Africa (now Morocco), and becomes the first sitting president to travel on official business by airplane. The long trip via a Boeing 314 Flying Boat named the Dixie Clipper, began on January 11 and required several stops for refueling. Officials determined flying was safer than a ship as German U-boats were wreaking havoc in the North Atlantic. At Casablanca, Roosevelt met with British Prime Minister Winston Churchill and agreed to demand unconditional surrender of the Axis powers. |
