On January 14, 1943, President Franklin D. Roosevelt arrives in Casablanca, French North Africa (now Morocco), and becomes the first sitting president to travel on official business by airplane. The long trip via a Boeing 314 Flying Boat named the Dixie Clipper, began on January 11 and required several stops for refueling. Officials determined flying was safer than a ship as German U-boats were wreaking havoc in the North Atlantic. At Casablanca, Roosevelt met with British Prime Minister Winston Churchill and agreed to demand unconditional surrender of the Axis powers.

U.S. Attorney General William Barr on Monday offered a vigorous defense of President Donald Trump’s decision to order a drone strike that killed top Iranian General Qassem Soleimani, saying Trump had the legal authority to act and that the question of whether Soleimani posed an imminent threat was a “red herring.”
