VIDEO: Venezuelan opposition leader, Juan Guaidó, has accused the government of Nicolás Maduro of trying to bribe lawmakers to vote against his re-election as National Assembly president. Guaidó, who last year declared himself Venezuela’s interim president, made the comments in an exclusive interview with VOA.

On This Day in American History
On January 10, 1901, prospectors strike oil at Spindletop Hill near Beaumont, Texas. The gusher blasted oil into the air for nine days at a rate of 16,000 cubic meters of oil a day before the well was finally capped. The discovery of oil at Spindletop is widely viewed as the start of the U.S. oil industry and paved the way for oil to become the most dominant source of energy in the world. Before Spindletop, oil was largely used as a lubricant and was burned in lanterns.

Iran has invited the National Transportation Safety Board, the U.S. accident investigation agency, to participate in the probe of the Ukrainian commercial jetliner that went down near Tehran earlier this week.

U.S. President Donald Trump has sent a happy birthday message to North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, who is believed to have turned 36 Wednesday. It is the first recent reported contact between the two leaders amid stalled nuclear talks.

U.S. government officials are watching and waiting, with many believing it is only a matter of time before Iran lashes out in cyberspace for the U.S. drone strike that killed Quds Force commander Qassem Soleimani last week.

VIDEO: China’s close alliance with Cambodia has been forged, in large part, with billions of dollars in aid and investment tied to Beijing’s Belt and Road Initiative, which provides developmental assistance around the world to strengthen trade ties and political influence. Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen and his government have welcomed this assistance, saying it comes without “strings attached” compared to western nations that link aid to democratic reforms. But as VOA reports, China’s massive loans and investment in Cambodia come at a price.
