On December 18, 1865, the 13th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution is formally adopted ensuring “neither slavery nor involuntary servitude … shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction.” Almost two years earlier, during the height of the Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation calling for all states to free their slaves. |
