On December 18, 1865, the 13th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution is formally adopted ensuring “neither slavery nor involuntary servitude … shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction.” Almost two years earlier, during the height of the Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation calling for all states to free their slaves.

U.S. President Donald Trump hosted Guatemala’s outgoing president Jimmy Morales at the White House Tuesday, where the two discussed immigration and trade.

Indonesia’s top Muslim clerical organization has dismissed a Wall Street Journal report that local Muslim organizations had received donations, financial support and other forms of assistance in return for keeping quiet about China’s treatment of its Uighurs.
