On December 2, 1972, The Temptations’ song, “Papa was a Rolling Stone,” reaches number one on the Billboard charts, marking the last time the legendary group has a number one hit. The group, which formed in Detroit, Michigan in 1960, was one of the most successful acts at Motown Records, with huge hits like “My Girl,” “The Way You Do the Things You Do,” and “Just My Imagination (Running Away with Me).” Over the course of their career, which included several different group members, The Temptations had 38 songs reach the Top 40, more than any other group. The band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1989. |
