A unifying force could be at work, at least temporarily, in America’s politically-polarized capital city. Thousands of Washington Nationals fans of all political stripes came to watch parties in their home ballpark this week, as their team won the first two games of a best-of-seven baseball championship series against the Houston Astros in Texas. This weekend the series comes to D.C.

On This Day in American History
On October 25, 1994, Susan Smith claims her car with two small children was carjacked by an African-American man in South Carolina. After nine days of intense, national media coverage, her story began to fall apart. Law enforcement determined she made it up and had purposely driven the car into a nearby lake, killing her two children. She was found guilty on two counts of murder and sentenced to life in prison.

In a hard-hitting speech on China, U.S. Vice President Mike Pence also criticized American companies for selling out this country’s values to protect their market access in the world’s most populous country.

African migrants evacuated from Libyan detention centers to Rwanda say they still want to make the dangerous journey to Europe, despite the abuse they encountered in Libya.
