On Oct. 9, 1936, the Hoover Dam in Nevada begins sending electricity nearly 430 kilometers away to Los Angeles. The dam on the Colorado River was originally called the Boulder Dam, but was renamed for President Herbert Hoover, under whose administration construction was started in 1931. President Franklin D. Roosevelt dedicated Hoover Dam in 1935, which then was the tallest dam in the world. It still generates electricity today. |
