VIDEO: The town of Minden, West Virginia, looks like many small American towns, yet it is unique in that it is one of the most toxic places in the country. Here, between 1970s and mid-1980s, the Shaffer Equipment Company used harmful chemicals to build electrical equipment. Those chemicals have been banned since 1979, but traces remain.

On October 7, 1913, the first moving assembly line is introduced by the Ford Motor Company. The innovation – later adopted by countless other industries – drove down the price by dramatically increasing how fast each vehicle was produced, making the automobile affordable for the average person and dramatically changing Americans’ lives.
