VIDEO: A full 8 hours of sleep just isn’t in the cards for some people. But what about a quick nap? New research suggests short naps can lower a person’s risk for cardiovascular events like heart attacks and strokes by as much as 48 percent. VOA visited a new shop that believes in the value of a good nap.

On This Day in American History
On October 4, 1927, sculptors begin carving Mount Rushmore in the Black Hills National Forest of South Dakota. The iconic American landmark, featuring the images of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt, took 12 years for sculptor Gutzon Borglum to complete. The idea for the sculpture came from a South Dakotan historian named Doane Robinson who saw it as a way to bring more tourists to the state. Over 2 million people visit the monument annually.

A plan to open a controversial, North Korea-themed bar in Seoul is highlighting the gray area surrounding South Korea’s National Security Act, which bans glorifying North Korea.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy will face an uphill battle selling a peace deal he approved midweek with Russia and pro-Moscow separatists in Donbas. The deal would see two breakaway republics become self-governing, although still part of Ukraine, say analysts.

The Hong Kong government on Friday banned people from wearing masks at public protests by invoking a British colonial era emergency powers act.

Sixty-two-year-old Sabah Muhammad Ismail resides in the al-Shahwan neighborhood of Old Mosul in a little house with walls riddled by bullets from the battle between the Iraqi forces and IS militants in early 2017. Many areas of the city remain damaged, leaving many unsatisfied with government efforts to rebuild.
