U.S. presidential candidates have long come to Silicon Valley to raise money and, with a tech company campus as a backdrop, talk about innovation and the future. But this year, things are different.

Robert Mugabe, who ruled the southern African nation of Zimbabwe for 37 years following the end of white minority rule in 1980, has died. He was 95 years old.  Some hail him as a liberation hero who stood by his principles. Others say he rigged elections, destroyed the economy of what was once Africa’s breadbasket and terrorized his people for decades.

This year, the government announced plans to raise cocoa incomes, but cocoa bean farms are being destroyed, with or without the farmers’ consent, as their landlords end their leases early, opting for other crops, development or mining.
