On This Day in American History
On Sept. 3, 1783, the Treaty of Paris is signed, officially ending the American Revolution. The treaty established the United States as a free and independent nation. Its borders were established, which included the 13 original Colonies as well as land stretching from the Georgia-Florida border to the Great Lakes and from the Atlantic Coast to the Mississippi River. American signatories included Benjamin Franklin, John Adams and John Jay. While some historians have said Britain was generous to the U.S. by ceding land west of the original Colonies, others say Britain may have been eyeing potential markets.

VIDEO: Fifty-seven percent of full-time American college students had a drink in the last month, and about 38% of those students were binge drinking, according to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism. What influences such heavy drinking on campuses?

Embattled Hong Kong chief executive Carrie Lam said Tuesday she has no intention of stepping down in order to end the heated antigovernment demonstrations that have shaken the city for three months. She rejected reports that China’s leaders had stopped her from quitting, saying she wanted to solve the city’s political quagmire herself.

VIDEO: For more than a century, coal has kept the lights on in the industrialized world. But coal-fired power plants are closing across the United States and Europe. Market forces have shifted to cheaper natural gas and renewables, not to mention the concerns about climate-changing carbon dioxide coal produces. But in the state of Wyoming, where coal is an important part of the economy, the government is trying to put the brakes on the transition.

VIDEO: Hong Kong’s protests have received worldwide attention, but perhaps nowhere has the pro-democracy movement resonated more powerfully than in nearby Taiwan. The self-ruled island, which is claimed by China, has become a source of solidarity and refuge for Hong Kong, as VOA reports from Taipei.
