On August 16, 1977, the “King of Rock,” Elvis Aaron Presley dies at his Graceland estate in Memphis, Tennessee. He was 42. Doctors pinned the cause of death to a heart attack brought on by Elvis’ weight gain and an addiction to barbiturates. Elvis grew up poor in Tupelo, Mississippi, and his family relocated to Memphis when he was 13. At the age of 19, he paid $4 to a Memphis studio and recorded a few songs, causing the highly influential owner, Sam Phillips, to take an interest in the young artist. Elvis’ popularity grew in the South, and soon Elvis made an appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show on television, leading to national fame. Some of Elvis’ most popular songs include “All Shook Up,” Jailhouse Rock,” Don’t Be Cruel” and many, many others. Despite his relatively short career, Elvis is the best-selling solo artist of all time due to his success in several genres, including pop, country, gospel and blues. He is buried at Graceland. |
