VIDEO: Scary folk tales and urban legends have always captivated people’s imaginations, especially young people. Now, “Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark,” a collection of short stories for children by author Alvin Schwartz and illustrator Stephen Gammell has been adapted by Oscar-winning producer Guillermo Del Toro and director André Øvredal. During its opening weekend, the movie grossed more than $20 million, proving again that teen horror flicks are a lucrative genre.

On This Day in American History
On August 16, 1977, the “King of Rock,” Elvis Aaron Presley dies at his Graceland estate in Memphis, Tennessee. He was 42. Doctors pinned the cause of death to a heart attack brought on by Elvis’ weight gain and an addiction to barbiturates. Elvis grew up poor in Tupelo, Mississippi, and his family relocated to Memphis when he was 13. At the age of 19, he paid $4 to a Memphis studio and recorded a few songs, causing the highly influential owner, Sam Phillips, to take an interest in the young artist. Elvis’ popularity grew in the South, and soon Elvis made an appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show on television, leading to national fame. Some of Elvis’ most popular songs include “All Shook Up,” Jailhouse Rock,” Don’t Be Cruel” and many, many others. Despite his relatively short career, Elvis is the best-selling solo artist of all time due to his success in several genres, including pop, country, gospel and blues. He is buried at Graceland.

VIDEO: Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on Thursday marked the anniversary of Japan’s World War II surrender by sending a memorial to the war-linked Yasukuni Shrine. That move upset many in South Korea, who are observing what they refer to as “Liberation Day” with a series of anti-Japan protests. The demonstrations come as Korea-Japan ties sink to their lowest level in years

Two medical workers affiliated with a U.S.-based medical group were killed Wednesday in an attack in northwestern Syria, the medical relief group said. A third medical volunteer was killed in the same attack.

North Korea has launched a fresh round of short-range weapons into the sea off its east coast, South Korea’s military reported. It was Pyongyang’s latest outburst of anger apparently at continued U.S.-South Korean military drills.

The United States has imposed a visa ban on the former director general of Sudan’s national intelligence and security services for his alleged involvement in gross human rights violations.
