On July 23, 1996, the U.S. women’s Olympic gymnastics team wins its first-ever team gold at the Atlanta Olympics. The team, nicknamed the “Mag 7″ or the “Magnificent 7,” faced perennial contenders Russia and Romania. Those teams took silver and bronze respectively. The team included Shannon Miller, the second most decorated U.S. female gymnast, as well as individual stars Dominique Dawes and Dominique Moceanu. The group was rounded out with lesser known gymnasts, including Kerri Strug, Amy Chow, Amanda Borden, and Jaycie Phelps. The most memorable moment of their triumph was Strug nailing the vault landing despite a badly injured ankle. Her toughness clinched the gold. |
