A group of 13 American students and five chaperones from Lich-Wilmerding High School in San Francisco has spent the last two weeks in Senegal building a primary school that will serve the village of Guedj Martin and its neighboring villages. They’re covered in dirt, dust and sweat, and blue and yellow paint is splattered on their clothes and shoes.

On July 3, 1988, the United States Navy cruiser Vincennes, shoots down an Iranian passenger jet over the Persian Gulf near the Straits of Hormuz. All 290 people on board were killed. The Navy originally identified Iran Air flight 655 as a military plane and said the plane was not flying in a commercial corridor and that the plane was descending. Further investigations revealed the plane was in a commercial corridor and was not descending. In 1996, the U.S. agreed to pay families of the victims $62 million in damages.

The White House on Tuesday downplayed President Donald Trump’s concession to allow sales of some computer chips to China’s Huawei Technologies company, saying the telecommunications giant remains blocked because of national security concerns from buying parts to produce its newest 5G smartphones.

Scientists in Australia say they have used artificial intelligence to develop a powerful new vaccine against the flu. The team from Flinders University believe it is the first time a computer has used its own machine learning to design a new drug for use in people.

New polls show California Senator and Democratic presidential contender Kamala Harris surging after her performance in last week’s first Democratic candidates’ debate. The surveys also show Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren gaining ground while the current Democratic frontrunner, former Vice President Joe Biden, is slipping.

A major armed group in Syria has committed to identifying and releasing young boys and girls currently within its ranks, and put in place preventative, protection and disciplinary measures related to child recruitment and use, according to the United Nations.
