The story of a murderous great white shark terrorizing the small town of Amity was an instant commercial and critical success and was a breakthrough for a 27-year-old director, Steven Spielberg. The film, which was based on a 1973 book by Peter Benchley, was the highest ever grossing at the box office until it was unseated by 1977′s Star Wars.
