On June 6, 1944, Allied forces storm the beaches at Normandy, France, taking a major step to free Europe from the Nazis. Before the D-Day landings, some 13,000 British and American paratroopers had already touched down behind enemy lines, and by the end of the day, some 150,000 soldiers had landed in France. During Operation Overlord, which remains the largest amphibious operation in history, the Allies suffered about 10,000 casualties, including over 4,400 who made the ultimate sacrifice. World War II was over less than a year after D-Day. |
