A large group of Democratic presidential contenders is off to an early and intense start in 2019, even though the first caucus and primary votes will not come until next February. But some experts are already predicting that the race for the party nomination could be one of the longest and nastiest in years.

On This Day in American History
On April 18, 1942, Lieutenant Colonel James H. Doolittle leads a force of 16 B-25 bombers to attack Japan. The bombers launched from the USS Hornet aircraft carrier about 650 miles from Japan. Since landing on an aircraft carrier was impossible, the plan was to have all the planes land in friendly parts of China. While the bombing didn’t do much damage, it was a major morale boost for the U.S., which was still stinging from the sneak attack at Pearl Harbor. Three of the 80 airmen died in the raid, and it is estimated that about 50 Japanese were killed. Doolittle was later awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor.

North Korea is demanding that U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo no longer take part in any further talks involving its nuclear weapons program.

Ivanka Trump’s appearance at the Women Entrepreneurs Financial Initiative (WeFi) summit in Ivory Coast was her last stop on a four-day tour of Africa to promote a $50 million initiative signed by her father in February that is aimed at encouraging women’s employment in developing countries.

VIDEO: U.S. authorities have charged 53 medical professionals, including 31 doctors, for their roles in illegally prescribing opioids and other dangerous drugs, sometimes in exchange for sex. Making the announcement in Cincinnati, Ohio, Wednesday, federal officials said their work is not finished.

VIDEO: In the ongoing elections in India, two regional parties have created a stir because of the number of women they’ve chosen as candidates. Forty percent of Trinamool Congress candidates are women, and 30 percent of the candidates for the Biju Janta Dal are women. No national party has featured women in such large numbers, which is why experts say India won’t see a significant jump in the number of women elected to India’s parliament.
