On April 11, 1951, President Harry S. Truman relieves General Douglas MacArthur of his command of U.S. forces in Korea. Despite MacArthur’s successful landing at Inchon in September of 1950, which saved South Korea, the famed general pressed for the invasion of North Korea. Truman reluctantly agreed, but worried the move might trigger Chinese entry into the war. It did, which led to increased tensions between the two men. When MacArthur quietly and without Truman’s consent, pushed for military action against China, Truman was furious and relieved him of duty.
