VIDEO: Underneath the city of Los Angeles, workers expanding the city’s subway system have uncovered a huge collection of ice age fossils, including saber-toothed cats, giant ground sloths and huge mammoths.

On April 9, 1865, Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrenders his 28,000 troops to Union General Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox, Virginia, starting a chain of events that would lead to the official end of the Civil War one month later. The war, which started on April 12, 1861, led to the deaths of between 620,000 and 750,000 Americans, more U.S. military deaths than all other wars combined. Grant, after seeing some of his soldiers celebrate, said “The war is over. The Rebels are our countrymen again.”

VIDEO: In India’s elections that begin Thursday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi hopes to return to power as he projects himself as a strong nationalist leader who will carry forward the country’s development. On the campaign trail, Modi has steered clear of more contentious issues such as rising unemployment and rural distress.


President Donald Trump says the United States will impose new tariffs on more than $11 billion worth of exports from the European Union, after the World Trade Organization ruled last year the EU was illegally subsidizing aircraft maker Airbus.

VIDEO: Sudan’s months-long anti-government protests reached a new stage over the weekend when tens of thousands of people marked a 1985 military coup with a sit-in at army headquarters that turned violent. At least six people were killed and dozens injured.

U.S. Attorney General William Barr on Tuesday declined to discuss with lawmakers any specifics of special counsel Robert Mueller’s report on the Russia investigation but said he expects to issue a redacted version of the document “within a week.”
