North Korea says it has no intention of giving in to Washington’s denuclearizationn demands and that Kim Jong Un would be making a statement soon on the possibility of further talks. Reports also indicate Kim may reconsider ending the more than yearlong ban on missile tests that has been in place.

On This Day in American History
On March 15, 1820, Maine enters the Union as the 23rd state. Maine had been administered as a province of Massachusetts since 1647. Statehood was a part of the Missouri Compromise of 1820, which required states to be admitted in pairs, one free and one with slavery, to preserve congressional balance. Maine was a free state, and Missouri, when it became a state in 1821, allowed slavery. Today, Maine is the least densely populated state east of the Mississippi River.  

Rights groups are voicing concerns about Sudan’s violent action against anti-government protests, which have been sweeping the African nation since last December. The rights groups say the action has left at least 60 people dead and hundreds in jail.

VIDEO: Some 200,000 people in Malawi have been displaced by floods affecting half of the country’s 28 districts. As of Wednesday, at least 56 deaths and over 500 injuries have been recorded. Meteorologists warn more rain is on the way. Lameck Masina reports from Nsanje, one of the districts most affected by floods.

VIDEO: For decades, Soviet, and later Russian male politicians have prided themselves on allowing women equal opportunities. But statistics still show disparities in pay for Russian women and men. Domestic violence is another problem after authorities eased penalties for it in 2017. Russian human rights campaigners and relatives of domestic violence victims spoke with VOA in Moscow.

VIDEO: Ethiopian families are continuing to mourn their loved ones killed Sunday in the crash of Ethiopian Airlines flight 302. Thirty-four-year-old Abdulahi Ibrahim was one of the 32 Kenyans who perished in the Nairobi-bound flight. His family, like the families of the other 156 people killed, are still coming to terms with the death of their loved one.
