In the United States these days, cheese is emerging as a product and point of pride that in some circles is beginning to rival that of local sports teams. That was clear at the United States Championship Cheese Contest held in Wisconsin last week, where a crowd of about 500 people packed a ballroom to see a champion named.

On This Day in American History
On March 14, 1948, comedian and actor Billy Crystal is born in Long Beach, California. Crystal began doing stand up comedy as a teen and turned that into regular television sitcom appearances. His popularity on those shows paved the way for Crystal to star in popular movies such as When Harry Met Sally … and City Slickers. Crystal was also the host for the Oscars for many years in the 1990s and early 2000s.

China’s top legislature is expected to pass the country’s first Foreign Investment Law this week at a time when negotiators from Beijing and Washington work to hammer out a trade deal. Analysts and business groups say the legislation is a step in the right direction, but still falls short.

VIDEO: Students at major U.S. universities from Yale to Stanford are reflecting on the admissions scandal enveloping their schools. On Tuesday, federal prosecutors indicted 50 people, including coaches, test administrators, parents and two Hollywood celebrities in a far-reaching corruption probe. VOA has more from students at the University of Southern California, which is embroiled in the scandal.

South Korea’s entertainment industry was upended this week after a celebrity’s cell phone, which was in for repairs, revealed widespread alleged acts of sexual misconduct. YG Entertainment, which is tied closely to the stars at the center of the scandal, has seen its stock fluctuate this week as high-profile K-pop singers linked to it were implicated in the illegal activity.

VIDEO: Children whose families fled conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo now have a new fight for survival. UNICEF estimates two hundred and sixty thousand of them face malnutrition. As civilians return to their homes and overburden local health care facilities, that number is likely to rise.
