On March 7, 1876, Scottish-born American Alexander Graham Bell receives the patent for his new invention, the telephone. Bell gained an interest transmitting speech over wires after seeing the telegraph, which was invented in 1843. The first message transmitted over Bell’s telephone was from Bell to his assistant. It was simply ““Mr. Watson, come here, I need you.”
