On Feb. 15, 1933, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt escapes an assassination attempt after delivering a speech in Miami, Florida. Giuseppe Zangara, a mentally ill, unemployed attacker, opened fire on Roosevelt’s open car, wounding five. While Roosevelt was not injured, the mayor of Chicago, Anton Cermak, was shot in the stomach and died 23 days later. Zangara was convicted, sentenced to death and executed in March of 1933. |
