On Feb. 13, 1965, President Lyndon B. Johnson approves Operation Rolling Thunder, which called for the massive bombing of North Vietnamese transportation routes into South Vietnam as well as other infrastructure. The first bombing took place on March 2, 1965. Between then and Nov. 2, 1968, the U.S. dropped 643,000 tons of explosives on North Vietnam. The U.S. lost almost 900 aircraft during the operation. Operation Rolling Thunder caused much damage and casualties in North Vietnam, but did not significantly erode the will of the North Vietnamese to fight. |
