On Feb. 12, 1809, the 16th president of the United States, Abraham Lincoln, is born in Hodgenville, Kentucky. Lincoln grew up poor and was self-educated but became a lawyer in Illinois, which eventually served as a launching pad for his political career. Lincoln is one of the most admired presidents in U.S. history, leading the forces of the Northern states to victory in the Civil War, the bloodiest war in American history – and in the process, reuniting the country under one flag. A talented writer, Lincoln is known for the Gettysburg Address, one of the most famous speeches in American history, and for the Emancipation Proclamation, which freed the slaves. Lincoln was assassinated days after the end of the war. |
