On Feb. 1, 1790, the Supreme Court of the United States meets for the first time in the Royal Exchange Building in New York City. The Court was established by Article Three of the U.S. Constitution, which became the law of the land in March of 1789. The Court “is the highest tribunal in the Nation for all cases and controversies arising under the Constitution or the laws of the United States,” according to its website. After New York City, the Court moved briefly to Philadelphia and then onto Washington, D.C., where it is today. |
