On Jan. 25, 1971, cult leader Charles Manson and three of his followers are convicted of the 1969 murder of actress Sharon Tate and others. On the night of Aug. 9, 1969, Manson, Susan Atkins, Leslie Van Houten, and Patricia Krenwinkle, under the direction of Manson, broke into Tate’s Beverly Hills home, which she shared with director Roman Polanski, and murdered five adults and Tate’s unborn baby. Polanski was away. Manson was sentenced to death, but that was commuted to life without parole when California abolished the death penalty. Manson died in 2017.
