On Jan. 24, 1935, the first canned beer goes on sale in Richmond, Va., when the American Can Company and Gottfried Krueger Brewing Company partnered to deliver 2,000 cans of beer and cream ale. Canned beer now makes up about half of the $20 billion U.S. beer market, and even microbrewers are increasingly turning to cans because they guarantee taste and prevent light damage to the beer.
