On Jan. 18, 1803, president Thomas Jefferson asks Congress to fund the Lewis and Clark expedition. Jefferson reportedly asked for $2,500, but some say the amount was much higher. The goal of the expedition was to explore the massive lands the U.S. acquired with the Louisiana Purchase. Merriwether Lewis and William Clark traveled with 50 others, including an African-American slave and a female Indian guide, Sacagawea. The explorers left from near St. Louis on May 14, 1804. They returned on September 23, 1806 after having traveled all the way to the Pacific coast. |
