On This Day in American History
On January 11, 1908, U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt declares the Grand Canyon a national monument. Native Americans lived in the canyon and surrounding areas for centuries, and the first Europeans to see the canyon were Spanish explorers who arrived in 1540. However, it wasn’t until 1869 that the canyon was fully explored when geologist John Wesley Powell led 10 men down the Colorado River, seeing the full 466-kilometer long gorge. Today, more than 5 million people a year visit the Grand Canyon.

VIDEO: U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo sharply criticized former President Barack Obama’s policies in the Middle East, as the top U.S. diplomat outlined the Trump administration’s vision for the region. Former Obama administration officials denounced the speech, which Pompeo delivered in Cairo. Pompeo also called on U.S. allies in the Middle East and elsewhere to do more to fight Islamic State terrorists and counter what he termed Iran’s “malign influence.”

Before Somalia’s civil war, the shorelines of the capital, Mogadishu, were renowned for their wide beaches and pure blue ocean waters. These attractions are still there today. It’s just that in many locations, they’re spoiled by ever-spreading piles of trash.
