U.S. President Donald Trump headed to the U.S.-Mexico border Thursday for a firsthand look at efforts to thwart illegal immigration, a day after declaring that talks with opposition Democratic leaders on border security and the partial government shutdown were a “total waste of time.”

On January 10, 1901, prospectors strike oil at Spindletop Hill near Beaumont, Texas. The gusher blasted oil into the air for nine days at a rate of 16,000 cubic meters of oil a day before the well was finally capped. The discovery of oil at Spindletop is widely viewed as the start of the U.S. oil industry and paved the way for oil to become the most dominant source of energy in the world. Before Spindletop, oil was largely used as a lubricant and was burned in lanterns.

One lawmaker is the speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, the third most powerful person in American politics. The other lawmaker is a brand-new member of Congress, who ran for public office for the first time last year. But in terms of social media influence, New York Democratic Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has the clear lead, surpassing House Speaker Nancy Pelosi in the number of Twitter followers this past week.

VIDEO: North Korean leader Kim Jong Un headed home after visiting China this week. Neither Pyongyang nor Beijing has provided details about the Kim visit, which comes amid preparations for a possible second summit between Kim and U.S. President Donald Trump.

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Thursday that although the United States is withdrawing its forces from Syria, it remains committed to fighting Islamic State militants and preventing the group from growing.

Cameroon’s top female football (soccer) star has opened an academy to teach the sport to girls. The academy is the first of its kind in Cameroon, where football is still largely considered a boys’ sport.
