Maps do more than show us how to get to where we want to go. They also can chart a journey into America’s past, offering insight into the everyday lives of ordinary people, while highlighting their hopes, dreams and fears dating all the way back to the birth of the nation.

On This Day in American History
On January 8, 1962, the Mona Lisa is exhibited for the first time in the United States at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. More than 2,000 dignitaries came to see Leonardo da Vinci’s masterpiece that evening, and over the course of a three-week stay, some 500,000 people viewed the famous painting. The painting then went to New York where it was seen by more than 1 million people. Completed in 1504, the Mona Lisa is a portrait of the wife of wealthy Florentine citizen Francesco del Gioconda.

Hundreds of thousands of visitors will attend the Consumer Electronics Show this week in Las Vegas, hoping to catch a glimpse of the future. And the future, it turns out, is going to be chatty and connected. Attendees will see more voice-activated assistants, such as the Amazon Alexa speaker, but in many more gadgets, cars and appliances.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un is in Beijing this week, his fourth visit in a less than a year. The trip comes as Chinese and U.S. officials held a second day of trade talks and as Kim prepares for a second possible meeting with President Donald Trump.

President Donald Trump is making his case Tuesday to the American public that the country is facing a “humanitarian and national security crisis” at the U.S.-Mexico border and needs a wall to thwart illegal immigration, a dispute with lawmakers that has resulted in a partial 18-day government shutdown.

VIDEO: Some 435,000 people died of malaria in 2017, most of them in sub-Saharan Africa, according to the World Health Organization. An entrepreneur in Burundi has developed a line of cosmetics that keep mosquitoes, which carry malaria, at bay.
