At the start of a new U.S. Congress, Republicans expand their Senate majority to 53 members, while Democrats number 47, including two independents who caucus with them. VOA takes a look at the senators who are new to the chamber, many of whom are already well known in Washington and beyond.

On January 3, 1987, Aretha Franklin becomes the first woman admitted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. One year earlier, when the hall of fame opened, the first inductees were all male, including Buddy Holly, Chuck Berry, Elvis Presley, Fats Domino, James Brown, Jerry Lee Lewis, Little Richard, Ray Charles, Sam Cooke and the Everly Brothers. Since Franklin’s induction, many women have been admitted, including Janis Joplin, Joni Mitchell, Bonnie Raitt, Madonna and many others.      

VIDEO: U.S. President Donald Trump has criticized U.S. generals for not defeating the Taliban insurgents in Afghanistan after nearly two decades of involvement. Speaking to reporters at a Cabinet meeting Wednesday, Trump said the generals were given “all the money they wanted” and “didn’t do such a great job in Afghanistan.” The president questioned justification for the expense in a country thousands of kilometers away from the United States

China is meeting a growing demand for armed drones in the Middle East, adding new military capabilities to an already tense security situation, according to a new report from the London-based Royal United Services Institute.
