On December 7, 1941, at 7:48 a.m. local time, nearly 400 Japanese warplanes descend on the U.S. naval base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Over 2,400 Americans were killed in the surprise attack, and numerous ships were sunk or damaged. Luckily for the U.S. Navy, the Pacific Fleet’s three aircraft carriers were at sea. The attack drew the U.S. into World War II, and then president Franklin D. Roosevelt called December 7 “a date which will live in infamy.” |
