Top White House officials are continuing to take a hard line on U.S.-China trade talks, even after the arrest of a prominent Chinese tech executive that some fear could derail a trade truce between Washington and Beijing.

On This Day in American History
On December 7, 1941, at 7:48 a.m. local time, nearly 400 Japanese warplanes descend on the U.S. naval base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Over 2,400 Americans were killed in the surprise attack, and numerous ships were sunk or damaged. Luckily for the U.S. Navy, the Pacific Fleet’s three aircraft carriers were at sea. The attack drew the U.S. into World War II, and then president Franklin D. Roosevelt called December 7 “a date which will live in infamy.”

Locals in Iraqi areas formerly controlled by IS say they are more worried about their future than the past. Militants may have lost almost all of their territory, but attacks continue and residents fear the group will once again rekindle its campaign of all-out violence.

President Donald Trump has announced he will nominate State Department spokesperson Heather Nauert as the new U.S. ambassador to the United Nations.

VIDEO: Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko met with the families of Ukrainian sailors who were captured by Russia. One of them, Vasyl Soroka, was wounded during the capture, and his family has been unable to communicate with him. VOA met with Vasyl’s family in the Odessa region of Ukraine and has this report.
