Emissions of planet-warming gases will hit an all-time high this year, according to a new report. The figures are the latest indication of how far the world is from meeting the goal set out in Paris in 2015.

On This Day in American History
On December 6,1884, workers complete the Washington Monument in Washington, D.C., by placing an aluminum plate at the top of the 169-meter, Egyptian-style obelisk. Fundraising for the monument started in 1832, and construction began on July 4, 1848.  Construction was halted between 1854 to 1877 because of a lack of funds and the Civil War. The Washington Monument is both the world’s tallest predominately stone structure and the world’s tallest obelisk. For several years, it was the tallest structure in the world, but was overtaken by the Eiffel Tower in 1889.

VIDEO: This week’s Plugged In looks at two major stories: the death of former President George H.W. Bush, and the assembly of world leaders at the G-20 summit in Argentina. The show includes exclusive interviews with U.S. President Donald Trump and Singapore Finance Minister Heng Swee Keat, as well as analysis from VOA correspondents around the world.

It’s going to be a cozy Christmas this year as more Americans shop for comfortable apparel and accessories like fuzzy sweatshirts and sweaters, pajamas, socks and slippers.

After previous false starts and amid mounting international pressure from the United States and other Western powers, the warring sides in Yemen’s catastrophic civil war are engaging in low-key U.N.-brokered peace “consultations” in Sweden. But diplomats caution that participants seem unlikely to make major compromises, and the focus is more on de-escalation.

VIDEO: Nigeria’s unemployment numbers jumped by nearly 30 percent this year to 16 million, according to a November report by the National Bureau of Statistics. Another two million are expected to be unemployed by the end of the year. The negative trend comes as Nigeria this year overtook India as having the world’s largest population of people living in extreme poverty and just ahead of February presidential elections.
