On November 9, 1906, President Theodore Roosevelt leaves the United States for Panama on the first foreign trip ever taken by a U.S. president. He traveled on board the battleship Louisiana. During his time in Panama, Roosevelt visited the site of the future Panama Canal, where preparations for its construction was already underway. The canal, which connects the Atlantic Ocean and the Pacific Ocean and was administered by the U.S., opened in 1914. After leaving Panama, Roosevelt went to the territory of Puerto Rico and then back to U.S. on November 26. |
